Apolemia sp.
These photos are of the long chain part of Apolemia
sp.,
detached from the gas-filled bladder which
is also a part of this very long group of species.
Anyone
have a photo of an intact individual with the gas bladder?
Do not touch! These have a sting.
Previously identified here
as the species Apolemia uvaria, but it turns out that Apolemia
uvaria
have only been identified in the Mediterranean
and off Norway. There are some 15 or so species of Apolemia
off California, but only a couple have been described
and it's very difficult to distinguish species (Oct 2004).
